Modern Quilting

This post has been brewing away in the drafts folder for some time, as new information kept turning up, some of it beautifully distracting from the task at hand.  However, today saw the launch of a publication that merits attention right now.

For some time, the Modern Quilt movement has been gaining traction, emerging as a fresh approach to the traditions of quilt making.  Many of its leading lights are younger people (and some not so young), and that means that collectively they are very comfortable with online communication, so there are many blogs and websites, flickr groups and other fancier online formats for promotion and communication - including online Modern Quilting Guilds, some of them here in Australia. And they are very comfortable with digital imaging, so there are lots of absolutely gorgeous photos!

You're probably already familiar with some of its elements, even if you haven't come across the term "modern quilting".

Modern Quilting is recognised by the freshness of the style and fabrics used -  not to be confused with contemporary art quilting, it's actually much closer to quilting traditions than that.  Lots of piecing, fresh looking fabrics, lots of solid colours, white and lighter colours, modern prints,  non-symmetric placement of blocks and pieces within blocks (and lots of symmetry too!), quilting that varies from very simple to much more complex, but usually very integral part of the design process, and very interesting and sometimes whimsical backings.

Modern Quilters appear to be very generous (and that's traditional) - an impressive number of free online tutorials, extremely well illustrated abound.

The easiest way to see what it is all about is to check out some modern quilters and their quilts, and focus on the types of fabrics and patterns, and the overall style.

And so to today's launch of  Fat Quarterly - the first e-zine for Modern Quilters.

It won't be to everyone's taste, but if you like the look and want to know more, here are some places to look:

Online photos of 2010 AQS Quilt Show & Contest - Paducah

Dina is in the US on holiday, and the AQS Quilt Show in Paducah, Kentucky is on her itinerary - she was lucky to be travelling form Australia.  One tutor planning to travel from the UK missed the Show as flights were cancelled by the Icelandic volcano eruptions, and Kaffe Fassett made it by one day, according to the AQS Quilt News blog .  You can see the winning quilts online here.

Quilting Month on "Sew, Mama, Sew !" blog

There is much to look at enjoy during Quilting Month II on the Sew, Mama, Sew! blog, including a new quilt featured every day during April (yes, it is a bit late, but just click back through "older posts" to catch up).

And if you like it, check out the original Quilting Month (February 2008) for a bit more eye candy, and useful information too.

Viewers' Choice, 2010

Hundreds of people enjoyed our exhibition over the weekend, and the majority of them chose Inspiration from Japan, by Loraine McIntosh for the Viewer's Choice award.

Loraine's beautiful machine appliquéd quilt was made in a class run by Irene Cowie over a period of 2 years. It was quilted by Jo-Ann Phillips of Quiltwise (and Fairholme Quilters). Block patterns were drawn from Circles of the East , The Changing Seasons, and Quilting with Japanese Fabrics.

After the disappointment of her Quilts and Flowers tour to the UK and Europe being cancelled at very short notice on Friday (a casualty of the Icelandic volcano), the award was a welcome lift for Loraine, and it was nice that she was here to receive it. Congratulations!!

Thanks to Ros Pullen for the photo.

Fairholme Quilters 2010 Quilt Show - one more day !

Our patchwork bunting is drawing plenty of attention to our Quilt Show at Thornleigh Community Centre this weekend. The show opened on Friday morning, and will close at 3.00 pm tomorrow (Sunday 18th April).

Please join us during the day for the exhibition, some shopping opportunities, and for morning tea or lunch, and pick up some raffle tickets for one of two fabulous quilts, to be drawn at the close of the Show - an excellent way to spend an autumn Sunday.

Our quilt market stalls are from Blueberries and Cherry Pie and Country Pickin's at the Corner, and we have a collection of craft work from Fairholme members and boxes of pre-loved quilting magazines for sale. The monthly Thornleigh Farmers Market is across the road on Sunday morning, and Bunnings is right next door - something for everyone!

Maureen's 1/2" hexagons have been about 12 years in the making ..... as you can see from the detail below, many of them are fussy cut. Her daughter is looking at with admiration .... are you keeping count of the number of pieces, Maureen?

Liberty of London ..... fabric and quilts

Noelle's fashion designer daughter lives and works in London. She recently went off to Liberty to buy her Mum a selection of the reproduction fabric specially commissioned by the V & A to coincide with its current exhbition exhibition, Quilts 1700 - 2010 (what a lovely daughter she is) - and there in the store was a display of old (and some decidedly quirky) quilts, hung from the timber balconies of the beautiful interior. This first picture is not a great one of the quilt, but look carefully and you will see the Liberty staff member cutting Noelle's fabric while Gretl checked out the quilts.

Thanks Noelle, and Gretl.

Stiching Up Wellington - TV ad

Have you seen this tourism ad encouraging us to visit Wellington? The animation is all done with fabric, and the final map is a quilt! Very clever. You might catch it at the movies too.

And there's another one on at the moment, about retirement (?) where a woman says "I like quilting - I could do that!" Why doesn't she just get started now - what's she waiting for?
